Cookie Policy
Last updated: 9 August 2026
The short version. We set no cookies of our own. Your cookie choice is saved in your browser's local storage, not a cookie. If you accept analytics, Google sets cookies. Advertising cookies have been removed entirely.
Cookies and other browser storage
A cookie is a small file a site stores in your browser and sends back on later visits. Sites can also use local storage, which keeps data in your browser but is never automatically transmitted. This page covers both, because the distinction matters for what actually leaves your device.
What this site stores
Strictly necessary — always active
| Name | Type | Purpose | Expires |
|---|---|---|---|
cookie_consent | Local storage | Remembers whether you accepted or declined analytics, so we stop asking | Until you clear it |
cookie_consent_date | Local storage | Records when you made that choice | Until you clear it |
cf_clearance and similar | Cookie (Cloudflare) | Set by Cloudflare Turnstile to confirm you passed the human check on the IP lookup | Session / short-lived |
These do not require consent: the first two exist purely to honour your choice, and the third is needed to protect the service from automated abuse.
Analytics — only if you accept
| Name | Provider | Purpose | Expires |
|---|---|---|---|
_ga | Google Analytics | Distinguishes one visitor from another | 2 years |
_ga_<id> | Google Analytics | Maintains session state | 2 years |
Advertising — none
This site previously used Google AdSense, which set advertising and personalisation cookies. AdSense has been removed completely, along with its scripts and cookies. No advertising or cross-site tracking cookies are set here any more.
Managing your choice
Use the banner shown on your first visit to accept or decline analytics. To change your mind afterwards, clear this site's data in your browser (which removes the stored choice) and the banner will appear again.
Browser controls
Every major browser lets you view, block and delete cookies and site data:
You can also opt out of Google Analytics across all sites with Google'sbrowser add-on.
Blocking the strictly necessary items will not break the tools, but you may be asked to complete the human check more often, and the consent banner will reappear on each visit.
The developer tools
The tools themselves set no cookies. Those that run in your browser — encoding, hashing, password generation, IP and subnet maths — keep nothing at all; what you type is discarded when you leave the page. See thePrivacy Policy for which tools query external services.
Changes
We will update this page whenever the storage we use changes, and revise the date at the top.
A note on our current setup. Analytics scripts presently load before the banner is answered, which means the choice is recorded but not yet enforced. We are aware of this and intend to gate them properly. If you would rather not be measured in the meantime, use your browser's controls or the Google opt-out linked above.
Please note. This page describes how the site actually behaves. It is not legal advice and has not been reviewed by a solicitor.
